DONATIONS FOR JAKE JAKES' PROGRESS

FLYER FOR POSTING

Jake is 26 months old and his previous owner has clearly neglected this poor boy from day one and is in deplorable condition. He is severely underweight; his spine is protruding about 1-1/2 inch to give you some indication of the malnutrition he has suffered and after seeing the veterinarian has pronounced Jake as being almost emaciated. He has severe tarter buildup and no muscle mass in his hind legs.

Despite these issues, Jake's temperament and personality are simply wonderful... typical of a newf, very
forgiving of human ignorance! Jake does not know one command, not even sit. I spent 10 hours on him just hand cutting off all the glue-like matting that were sizes of softballs filled with dried fecus and dirt. I could not bath him until this was all cut off. Jake was so patient during this whole time, not a whimper or snarl. He has hot spots and pyoderma. Has severe case of cherry eye with oozing puss out of one eye. He has green puss coming out of his penis. His ears were overflowing with black wax. After 4 baths and an additional day of true grooming; brushing with several different type combs, trimming his nails, sculpting what I could that was left of Jake's coat including his enormous front paws. His tail even lacks any substance in the way of fur. I started Jake immediately on Cephalexin for the severe infections. He has worms and was put on Albon. He will also need to be crypt orchid neutered, thus making the surgery more costly and more intrusive for Jake.

Jake will remain in foster care until he is fully recuperated and at optimum weight, at which time the stringent guidelines for placing a newf will be adhered to.

JAKE'S PROGRESSI will be posting Jake's progress to keep you updated!
09/26:  We bombed the house for fleas Tuesday (yuk) and he's on Frontline.  Today, Jake received a Pyrantel Pamoate (medicated) bath to rid his skin of the remaining bacteria.  I have been trying to keep up with cleaning his ears but it was just not enough with flushing (when I got him his right ear was so bad I used a plastic spoon to scoop out all the black wax).  So they airiated (sp?) them and put him on Baytril drops, he had 3 types of yeast infections in his ear.  And for the good news.... Jake has gained 2.9 pounds.  That is fabulous considering he had worms, and he tested negative today for worms so one less problem has been overcome!!  I can proudly say Jake has now learned 1-1/2 commands; he goes willingly in the crate when I ask him to Kennel Up and doesn't cry or bark and sleeps the whole night through, and will Sit on command about half the times... he's getting there and I'm so proud of him.  He gave Randy a kiss yesterday (first one for Randy) and is warming up to him nicely as well as to Dad.  He picked out his favorite toy... a green tuggy and plays enthusiastically with Pebbles in a tug-of-war.  He's also participating in "play bows" with Dino.  He's taking treats now and has a very soft mouth.  Jake now has his very own blankie which he comes in the house and promptly lays on and snuggles all up in it.    He is very good in the house and now comes in on his own without being coaxed.  The vet comped his follow up exam today and just charged for the cleaning, tests and meds.
9/27:  Despite the last minute cancellation of Pet Palooza which was held outdoors, the fundraiser turned out fabulous.   I had some fast thinking to do, so I called the local PetsMart and they had a fundraiser of their own going on, however, he gave me exactly two hours (including setting up and tearing down) to benefit Jake and we raised $168 plus a couple donations from Newf Neighborhood folks brought in a total of $288.  Not bad at all for 1-1/2 hours and coming within $12 of the $300 goal I had set for the day!!!  Thank you Newf Neighborhood for your generosity of time and donations!!!!

10/07:  Jake is coming along great and should be ready for surgery in a couple weeks... yippee!!!  He now knows sit and is learning down.  He's going on day 3 of run of the house so long as we are home, and... has just found out what a bathroom is, a shower (he thought he would join me-lol), and watching kids board the school bus from the inside looking out.  Randy was playing with Jake outside the other day, at one point Randy slapped his hands on his legs saying, come Jake, and Jake ran off wimpering.  Randy's heart just sank thinking what this poor dog had been through that spooked him with the slapping of his hands.  Randy got down on his knees and Jake came over to him then for a good hug.  Jake is starting to enjoy the luxury of carpeting in our great room by rolling around belly up and kicking his feet in the air for belly rubs, enjoying the fireplace and being entertained by a television while giving tons of kisses.

10/11:  Today is Jake's one month anniversary out of hell and boy has he come along way in a short time! He started going for walks on the leash this week at the city park and does great, with the exceptional leaning into your legs because he's probably nervous and unsure and wants to remain close for protection. Jake has found a new toy, the Kong and chews, chews, away!  Jake has a very soft mouth and has learned what a "treat" is and sits very well for them. Thursday was the first day he went willingly into the back of my truck saving my back finally <vbg>!  Off to the vets on Friday for follow up... Jake gained another 1/2 lb. I was hoping it would have been more but vet says not to worry, he will gain in spurts and to remember he had worms and just had his final dose of meds for that yesterday. It will be a slow process but he's doing good. The weight he does gain will be muscle. Jake is done with all meds except for ear drops for a couple more days, other than that his ears and skin are just about all cleared up. He's scheduled for his surgeries Wednesday the 15th. I'm giving him a bath this morning with the rest of the crew as well <vbg>!
10/16:  Jake had his surgery yesterday.  The vet said his one testicle was way up in his abdomen but the surgery went very well.  His teeth were cleaned and I'm happy to report no extractions or other dental work had to be done!  I brought him home that afternoon and he was a little groggy from the anesthesia, thus eating just a wee bit.  Today his appetite is back 100% and it's full steam ahead for Jake... no happy hat is gonna keep this boy down <vbg>!  He's on Deramaxx once a day for pain, ointment for his eye, and ear drops for the yeast in his ear.  The bacteria in his ear is all gone and we're still tackling the yeast in his ear.  Poor guy, his ear was so bad it's taking 6 weeks to eliminate all the nasty stuff that was growing in there. The surgery on his eye was not done.  After closer examination what was originally thought to be cherry eye was then diagnosed by the vet and confirmed by an ophthalmologist of everted third eye lid.  More information is being sought out before considering any further surgery.

10/20:  Jake managed to get around the biggest "happy hat" the vet had and removed some of the stitches.  So off to the vet he went today to get stapled up and on Cephalexin for the infection.  He is such a trooper this boy!  Staples removed and a bath are scheduled for Howloween!  Jake has now learned "come" on command, he's such a good boy and oh so lovable!
10/26:  Despite the awful happy hat that's the size of a semi-truck tire <vbg>, Jake is happy as can be.  Just five more days and he'll be happy hat-free, stitch-free, and smelling all pretty again!  He just can't wait to romp around in the yard again with Pebbles and Dino.  Poor Pebbles, the look on her face when Jake goes running up to her to play, she runs from the happy hat... it's a hoot to watch!
10/31:  Jake was so excited to get all his stitches and staples out today.  The incision where the crypt orchid was done healed beautifully, however, a small area by his scrotum needed to be restapled again.  So more antibiotics and another 10 days of a happy hat and he should be all set.  This poor boy has been crated except for eating, drinking, potty and strict supervision for a walk in the yard.  He's such a trooper and retains a wonderful, happy attitude despite his lengthy recuperation.

11/14:  Jake has come along way and finally got rid of his happy hat!!  He got a bath and I trimmed and brushed him out.  His coat has come back so beautifully, hardly any ticking and is such a "luv bug".  To look at this boy now from 2 months ago is amazing just how resilient this wonderful Newfoundland breed is!!

Thank you from Jake!

Are you interested in adopting Jake?

Please give some thought to each of the following questions, rather than automatically answering yes.  Newfoundlands are high-maintenance dogs and, while you may love the breed, you may discover that you do not have the required time or resources to devote to upkeep.   But, if you do, a Newf will more than repay you with a lifetime of love and loyalty.

Are you prepared to spend $150 or more each year on heartworm preventative, flea control and  annual vaccinations for a giant breed like a Newfoundland?

Are you willing to spend a half hour every other day for regular grooming and more time during the spring and fall shedding periods or have the dog professionally groomed?

Are you prepared to deal with the cost (which is often more expensive due to the breed’s large size) of non-routine/emergency veterinary care, especially as the dog gets older?

Are you willing to provide training?

The following are minimum requirements to qualify for consideration into the adoptive program for our Newf Rescue Program:

  1. Secure fencing
  2. Must be a house pet
  3. Past pet owners must provide a veterinarian reference
  4. All existing pets must be spayed/neutered

If you answered NO to any of the above requirements, please do not submit an application as it will not be processed.  However, if you feel you have special circumstances, please feel free to contact me at gina@newfrescue.com
